iNote-to-Self: Crafting the New and Improved YouIt's Monday. A new day. A new week. A perfect time to begin crafting the new and improved you. So go ahead. Dial up that career coach you've been meaning to call. What? She's booked until next week? But you are in the mood for some career advancing instruction and inspiration right now. Well, in lieu of the professional, let us introduce you to one of the greatest private coaching partnerships ever. Your iPod and Diana Ross. Perhaps one of the most inspirational songs ever recorded is "I'm Coming Out", originally recorded by Ross in 1981. This song not only motivates you to list all your talents and capabilities, it makes you feel like it is perfectly normal to announce them to the world. Maybe that's because when Ross released the smash hit, she did so with a big announcement of her own. After a comfortable and flourishing 20 year stint with Motown, the singing diva was cutting ties and moving to RCA Records. So when your dialing efforts go unanswered by the real career coaches, dial the scroll wheel on your iPod to "I'm Coming Out" instead. And show the world all you want to be. All your abilities. Rock on, girlfriend. |

iNote-to-Self: Money TalksQuestions: Who are the key players in the world of mergers and acquisitions? And how's the chairman of the Federal Reserve feeling about inflation these days? Not sure? Truth be told, neither were we. But that changed as soon as we started tuning in to Power Lunch on CNBC. Every day from noon to 2 p.m. hosts Bill Griffeth and Sue Herera take a look at the people and trends driving the financial markets and Wall Street. Things like technology. Real estate. Entertainment. And wine collecting! We know what you must be thinking, and no, we know you do not have time to watch a two hour show in the middle of the work day five days a week. But all you really need to absorb is the first 12 minutes of the show, one or two days a week. With that you will know just enough to toss around important sounding terms like dividend pay outs, capital gains and stock market correction. And just enough to make impressive chit-chat with that financial advisor you're going to hire because the confidence you gained from watching the show will translate into a smarter, richer you. Not a shabby return for a 12-minute investment. |

iNote-to-Self: "Ginger Rogers did everything Fred Astaire did – only backwards and in high heels." — Faith WhittleseyYou may not be doing the fox trot from 9 to 5, but even so, may we just point out that the Fred Astaires of the business world have a distinct advantage in those lace-up oxfords and cordovan loafers. So snug. So flat-footed. Why, just look at them run from meeting to meeting, challenge to challenge, without a fear of twisting an ankle. Well, step aside gentlemen. The Uptown fashion editors have found the perfect 9 to 5 Spring pump, ideal for running by day and dancing by night. The Linea Paolo 'Babe' peep toe, made in this season's hottest material – patent leather – will make you feel like a Golden Era film star every time you peek down at the grosgrain cord and ribbon trim, and is available in dark red, black and chocolate. So forget about teetering around on unsteady feet. Not only will you be dancing backwards to grab that next big assignment, you'll be running circles around everyone else while you do it. Now, if only you could wear that chiffon ball gown to work... |

iNote-to-Self: Eliminate Dark Circles Without Increasing Amount of SleepThose late nights in your office may have earned you brownie points at work, but they didn't do diddly for your ratings on the beauty charts. Now it's almost the weekend, you have big plans to go dancing (even if only from the refrigerator to the wine glass cabinet), and the raccoon look you saw in the mirror this morning has got to go. Cucumber slices and other natural beauty remedies aside, we know of one sure fix for hiding those dark circles: Secret Concealer and Secret Brightening Powder made by Laura Mercier, founder of the flawless face philosophy. The two products work together, like Electra Woman and Dyna Girl, to do away with those late-night badges of honor. Choose one of three Secret Concealer shades to counteract the eggplant tones under your eyes. Tip: Use the brush recommended by Laura, since the tapered surface helps you get in there with precision. Then set with the Secret Brightening Powder. Two minutes in the morning and you'll look like you just returned from a week at the spa. Talk about refreshing. |

iNote-to-Self: Think Twice About the Games Girls PlayLooking for some good old fashioned entertainment this weekend? How about a game of Monopoly? Or maybe it's been a rough week and Candyland will be more your speed. Whatever your choice, had you been a girl in the 60's, one of your options would have been the popular board game called The Exciting Game of Career Girls. Young females were encouraged to "dream big" and prepare for one of six possible vocations as a teacher, actress, model, nurse, airline hostess, and of course, a ballet dancer. Of course, today we can do anything we want, and at least a hundred other career choices for women can be added to those selections of the '60's. But just in case your daughters or nieces are playing games this weekend, board or video, you may want to make note that the some of the gaming industry still lingers behind in highlighting what women can do. Just one example: the modern Parker Bros game called Careers offers careerchoices of super mom, rock star, school teacher, fashion designer and animal doctor. Perhaps it's just an oversight, but did anyone consider offering Speaker of the House? Image at left: "Exciting" career choices for women offered in 1966 board game, "What Shall I Be? Calendar Girls RuleDid you know there are actually eight days in a week? Of course, there’s Monday through Friday. Then Saturday and Sunday. And finally, Someday. The best day of the week. So why is it we rarely get there? Maybe it’s because all those electronic calendars and PDA’s we use these days don’t have Someday anywhere in their programming. And we get so busy filling in the hours and minutes with tasks we have to do that we forget all about the things we want to do. That’s why we recommend, every now and then, managing your calendar the old fashioned way – and using the 8-Days-a-Week Planner from SeeJaneWork.com. This paper planner has plenty of room for plotting out seven days of the week, plus that special eighth column called Someday. Spiral bound so it lays flat, you can see the entire week at a glance, without losing sight of your dreams. So planner or no planner, let’s all agree to write down our want-to-do list right beside our have-to-do list. And find a little time to go to Someday, every day. |

Run, Run, Run for SomethingEver felt a tiny bit serious when thinking, “When women rule the world.....?” Here’s one group of people that totally believes in that concept: The White House Project based in New York City. This national, non-partisan, not-for-profit team works to advance women’s leadership and the way our country views women in leadership roles, particularly in the political sector. This group has launched a number of initiatives designed to offer guidance to all women of all ages. Look no further than the “Ms. President” patch they co-designed with the Girl Scouts. We especially recommend visiting the Programs page on their website. You might try tapping into your inner Hilary by attending one of the Vote, Run, Lead courses that equips you with the skills to actually run for office. Or you might simply print out a copy of the leadership brochure “18 Steps to Stand Out in the Crowd”. After all, if we don’t make sure there are enough women leaders, who will? Visit www.thewhitehouseproject.org for more information. |

Close and ClothesSome businesswomen love to meet over breakfast. Some prefer to meet over lunch. Others find meeting over dinner is most productive. When you add it all up, we women spend a lot of time conducting business while consuming calories. And by the time Thursday rolls around, we begin to worry about whether or not we will fit into our cute little outfits this weekend. Never fear. DietFacts.com has come to our rescue. This incredibly informative website has hundreds of listings with every meal imaginable. And best of all, it is searchable by brand and restaurant. So now we know that the blueberry muffin we ate this morning at Starbucks had 450 calories, 22 grams of fat, and 57 grams of carbs. And rather than let a little guilt impede our productivity, we’ll simply search the site for a low cal lunch at one of our favorite restaurants. In conclusion: It is possible to close many a deal over food and still fit into our favorite clothes over the weekend. Amazing what a little planning ahead can do for a girl.
