Modern Streaming on the Street

On weekends, you’re a leisurely coffee-and-morning-paper kind of girl.

But come Monday morning, you yearn to churn. Through the pages of the Wall Street Journal and New York Times and possibly USA Today. With a vengeance.

Yeah, r-i-g-h-t.

These days it’s all about doing more with less – time, that is.

So do the point-and-click thing.

For one of the finest sources of news-at-your-fingertips, check out the Wall Street Journal’s Video Center. (For you stealth-around-the-office types, take note: the audio starts as soon as you click.)

This handy dandy feature straight from one of the most prestigious publications in the world spotlights the top WSJ editors and reporters covering the topics you love best – business, personal technology, style, personal finance.

Oh yes, and food and wine.

Savvy strategy: Start with the “Most Popular” channel to keep up with what the Joneses are watching. In under 10 minutes you can listen to a handful of stories, be entertained and well informed.

Just a little point and click, and you’re a lot in-the-know. Leaving plenty of time to scan the headlines of your favorite celebrity blog. (You know you’re thinking about it.......)

Breathless... Excitement...
Please Don’t Stop

Warning: If you hate to witness a grown woman get her geek on, you may want to stop reading right now.
That’s because we’re about to talk about a power adapter with the same breathless excitement that some might use to describe an Hermes Birkin Bag.

OK. For those of you still with us, take note.

iGo has come out with a new everywhere85 power adapter, one that can power your laptop, plus a cell phone or MP3 player at the same time, thanks to interchangeable tips. (Pant.)

That can plug into a wall socket, your car’s power outlet or a power-enabled airline seat. (Pant, pant.)

And that is much, much lighter than previous models. (Taking deep breaths into paper bag now.)

That means that if you travel a lot or simply work on the go, you’ll have one sleek powering-up system that won’t force you to wrangle with bulky cords. So much easier to pack and tote around.

When technology delivers something that so perfectly suits the reality of work, it’s a beautiful thing. Yes, right up there with the Birkin.

Always Best to Give Back for the Holidays

Every Wednesday throughout the Holiday Season, we’ll give you some great shopping ideas. Happy Gifting!

Mmmm, online holiday shopping. Nothing more fun than mingling with kindred spirits (especially when you can’t see them), in single-minded pursuit of the perfect thing

But how about something for that someone who has everything?

In that case, it’s best not to give. But, rather, give back – to the environment, that is.

You see, you can bet those "I’ve got it all" types are totally into preserving the planet. And if they’re not, well, no better person than you to introduce them to the green ways of the world.

You’ll be intrigued by ShopGreen with PriceGrabber.com – they carry more than 20,000 products, from organic T-shirts to Energy Star-compliant computers. Added bonus: They give 5 percent of profits to a green charity of your choice.

Branch proves that you don’t have to look green to be green. A sexy, well-designed lineup of sustainable products rein at this San Francisco-based shop.

Or forgo the gift entirely and opt for some true green. For $5, you can plant a virtual tree on iVillage Forest, and the Conservation Fund plants an actual tree in protected parks across the U.S.

And remember, price never matters – to those who matter most.

Twinkle, Twinkle You Big Star

Sequins are brighter and sassier than ever this December. And, as you might imagine, they’re likely to show up at holiday parties as frequently as spiked egg nog.

So to stand out in the sea of shimmers, go for something totally fabulous and noteworthy.

Yes, with just sthe right choice, perhaps one of these brilliant picks, they’ll forget all about Christmas carols and find themselves humming “twinkle, twinkle, you big star”:

Tiny navy sequins light up the short, sassy glitterati mini, part of the J Crew Collection. With its grosgrain waistband, this piece is at ease at nightclubs or country clubs.

Do your own playful take on the traditional tuxedo jacket with the LaROK Sequin Blazer. Three-quarter sleeves and a sexy fit help show off your feminine wiles, as a gazillian dazzling black sequins light up the room.

The silver sequin dress by James and Elizabeth combines smoky tones with black piping and racerback styling. You may never want to take it off. Pair it with a white rabbit shrug to make a big entrance at twilight.

Hot to Trot Party Shoes

Once again, the holiday season is upon us. And with it comes endless opportunities to seek out the title of "Best Dressed Girl at the Party".

No doubt, you’re looking to clinch it – again – hands down.

To stand out as this year’s show stopper, add some punch to that little black dress of yours with a pair of pumps or strappy sandals that could outshine Rudolph’s nose.

Hot, sexy red.

Not only will it get you noticed, stepping out with a dash of crimson is the sure-fire-chic way to say, "Take note, people. I have arrived. I am here to stay".

A few faves:

You’ll fall shamelessly in love with Pura Lopez’s flirty peep-toe platform pump with ruched satin. Perfect for the big holiday office party. Totally danceable, too.

When the weather outside is frightful, warm up indoors with Luciano Padovan’s buttery-smooth-velvet peep-toe pump. Soft, sexy and steeped in the color of Bordeaux wine.

Or, if you must, go for glamour with Jimmy Choo’s silk satin sling back with Swarovski crystals. You can’t possibly make a misstep in these shimmery beauts. Your checkbook, however, may just hit the skids. (But it will be oh-sooooo worth it.)

Soundtracks to Success

You love to read. Unfortunately, the only “page-turners” that you seem to have time for these days are office memos, Chinese takeout menus, and, um, more office memos.

Guess your eyes will just have to delegate some work to your ears, which can happily tune in to the excellent self-development and business audiobook titles available through iTunes. (Who knew?)

Just download the iTunes audiobooks to your iPod and press play on a soundtrack to success.

A few favorites worth listening to:

“Seven Steps to a Better Job in 30 Minutes” by Tony Wrighton: Inspirational stories and tips to help you break your career rut by the end of your commute.

"The Now Habit" by Neil Fiore Ph.D.: Put off procrastination and learn how to manage your time more efficiently.

"The 4-Hour Work Week" by Timothy Ferriss: Score almost-too-good-to-be-true tips on achieving an 80/20 play/work balance. Really!

"Negotiation Boot Camp" by Ed Brodow: Angling for a raise? Pick up some negotiation pointers.

"You, Inc" by Harry Beckwith and Christine Clifford Beckwith: Finesse the art of selling yourself before that next interview.

Advice to advance your career? Now that’s music to your ears.

Do the World a Favor –
Tell Her She Should Run

With all this ’08 election campaign talk, it’s time we faced the facts, girlfriends.

Did you know the U.S. ranks 60th in the world in terms of female political representation?

That sucks. (Pardon the choice of wording, but sometimes there’s just no better way to say it.)

How to change this situation? It starts with you. And a little help from She Should Run.

This special project of the Women’s Campaign Forum is gathering 1,000 nominations of women who should run for public office. WCF then ensures each woman receives the support, training and resources she needs to run for office – and win.

The good news: When women do run for office, they win elections at the same rate as men.

So do the world a favor. Help close the gender gap by finding one good woman who would be super on the school board, a bang-up mayor, or a downright fine Congresswoman.

Then tell her she should run. And go to the She Should Run website and nominate her.

(P.S. She may be closer than you think... looking at you from the mirror tomorrow morning... )

For more on this subject, read Closing the Leadership Gap by Marie C. Wilson, Founder of The White House Project.

Hepburn for the Holidays

Every Wednesday throughout the Holiday Season, we’re giving you some great gift ideas. Happy Shopping!

She was timeless, elegant and modest. Audrey Hepburn played a lot of film roles – pixie, nun, stylish party-goer.

But her most meaningful role (in her own eyes) was as UNICEF’s Goodwill Ambassador, in which she helped children all over the world.

Today, the nonprofit Audrey Hepburn Children’s Fund continues her work.

And you can spread a little goodwill too, by buying the organization’s gorgeous Audrey Hepburn Limited Edition handbag for someone this holiday season.

Choose from 12 different limited-edition designs, each made of canvas and fine leather, and emblazoned with that iconic visage.

Other noteworthy ways to give back to children this holiday season, as Audrey would want us to:

Click on the Save the Children’s Gift Catalog to give a gift on behalf of a friend, such as a “Ray of Sunshine Kit” for a preschool center or library books for a poor community.

Put “An End to Hunger” on your wish list, and stock your own Heifer Gift Registry with goats, chicks, pigs and even trees to help families around the world.

Flat-tery Will Get You Everywhere

Whoever invented high heels obviously never spent 10 hours a day running around the office. Nor tried to climb the ladder of success.

Add in all the pavement-pounding you’re doing to find those perfect gifts (plus those Holiday party dance marathons) and your battered feet are ready to revolt.

So maybe it’s finally time to buy a gift for yourself: a brand new pair of ballet flats.

Today’s ballet flats have come a long way from tutus thanks to modern prints and embellishments that will appeal to big girl fashionistas.

But it all comes down to the comfort factor, which is why you’ll want to stash one of these slim pairs into your bag for the next time you need relief after a long day of heel hell.

Nine West Lohman 2 Satin Ballet Flats: A pretty jeweled brooch makes this black satin pair dressy enough for the office.

Coach Jilly Travel Ballet Flats: Coach has their own unique take on the ballet flat. Choose from a wide selection of sassy prints and colors, from a classic monogram to dramatic gold.

Georgina Goodman Patent Slipper Flats: These glossy and glam flats boast a slick patent surface and suede trim.

Trade that Little BlackBerry for a Little BlackMagic

Most days, you’re a lean, mean, power suit-wearing machine. But with countless holiday parties and New Year’s Eve looming, there’s only one thing on your mind: trading in your little BlackBerry for a little black dress.

Hey, even Cinderella gave herself the night off so she could throw on a killer party dress and head to the ball.

Get ready to let your hair down and slip into something a little more glamorous. These gorgeous LBDs will help you celebrate in style.

Catherine Malandrino Salvador Sleeveless Mini Dress: This feather-trimmed party dress is flirty, exuberant and destined for the dance floor.

Nicole Miller Matte Jersey Square Neck Dress: Dangerous curves ahead! This sleek little number turns any woman into Audrey Hepburn thanks to a flawless, figure-flattering cut.

Maggy London Silk Chiffon Trapeze Dress: As bubbly as a glass of champagne, this fun frock has a youthful charm. Bonus: You can actually move in it.

And don’t worry – your power suit will still be there in the morning.

Gifts for the Classic Overachiever

It’s the doing that warms her soul.

A classic overachiever, she’s never without a list of gazillion things to do (“Get fresh fruit at the market”), planned to do (“Brainstorm big idea all weekend”) and dreaming of doing someday (“Grab the world by its reins”).

This woman is in need of tools to help track her high-flying career goals all the way down to mundane tasks like picking up the dry cleaning.

So here are a few gifts that will reinforce her mantra that organizing isn’t boring, and that, yes, she really can do it all. (But you – and she – knew that already.)

The Cross it Off Book puts a unique twist on a girl’s to-do list, with one section featuring 150 lined, perforated pages perfect for tear-and-go lists. Another section has 50 sticky notes - in duplicate. Perfect for delegating tasks – without forgetting who’s doing what.

Speaking of sticky notes, make her sticky notes as stylish as she is, with this note block by Snow & Graham.

Color-code her life with Whomi’s Shop-Call-Do pad. Calls go on pink, to-do’s go on blue, shopaholic cravings go on yellow.

All nice touches for any overachiever – even if she’s you.

Quiz: When your friend’s alarm goes off at the crack of dawn, are her (or his) first words:

a. Just 10 more minutes...

b. Yo, house boy! Could I get some coffee in here? (Throws head back on pillow after remembering there is no house boy.)

c. Wonder if the weekend fares to Paris have dropped?

If the answer would be “c,” here’s a handful of goodies to go along with that wanderlust:

Luxe City Guides - These glam pocket-sized companions lay it all out: fine and funky dining spots, shopping advice, and little-known services you’d simply never find on your own.

A Goyard piece of luggage. These absolutely gorgeous hard-sided trunks and custom-fitted cosmetics cases have been made for luxurious nomads (and aristocracy) since 1853.

Shore up travel plans with the help of a set of three leather mini-travel journals, labeled “Long Weekends,” “Short Weekends” and “Vacations.”

Be inspired by Women Travelers: A Century of Trailblazing Adventures 1850 – 1950. Ever so brave, these women faced unimaginable dangers as they crossed all five continents, often armed with little more than a corset and an umbrella.

Yes, all lovely gifts, indeed. And with any luck, she (or better yet, he) will invite you to go along.

Gifts for the Stressed-Out Pal

Be honest. Do you actually know someone who isn’t stressed out and overworked – yourself included, Ms. Burning the Midnight Oil?

Didn’t think so.

So wouldn’t a gift that induces relaxation and serenity serve your maxed-out pals better than, say, a jewelry box?

These stress-relieving goodies are just what the doctor ordered.

Oh, and go ahead and stick an extra one in your shopping cart for yourself. You deserve it.

Massage Pen: The pen is mightier than the sword, especially when it’s battery-operated, accompanied by a pressure point chart, and can be used to discretely work out the kinks in your neck while you sit at your desk.

SpaFinder Gift Certificate: Treat your loved one to a relaxing massage or facial with these spa vouchers, which are accepted at 4,000 spas worldwide.

Kashwere Spa Robe: Forget terry-cloth. This kashwere chenille fabric is blissfully soft. If only you could wear it to the office.

ThisWorks Survive 5-Piece Kit: Relax, don’t do it. Instead, crack open this kit – featuring a calming assortment of herbal elixirs - to keep meltdowns at bay.

Friendship is like a good wine – it only gets better with age, it raises your spirits, and it’s a fantastic remedy after a long day of putting out fires at the office.

Luckily, your friends appreciate a nice bottle of wine just as much as you do – so why not celebrate that undying passion for the grape with a vino-inspired gift?

Raise a glass to these fabulous gift ideas:

Red Envelope Wine Dossier: This journal lets wine enthusiasts record their impressions of memorable wines. After all, things can get hazy after a few glasses.

Vera Wang Silver Vesta Wine Chiller: This sleek wine chiller looks a lot more luxe than its $40 price tag suggests.

Artecnica Floral Bottle Stoppers: Give that half-finished bottle of Shiraz a gorgeous crown. These beautiful resin stoppers come in a variety of colors and blooms.

GiftyBox Winery Tour & Tasting: Go Sideways with this amazing package, which covers a tour, tasting, discount, and a bottle of vino for two people, with 60 wineries nationwide to choose from. So what will it be – Napa or the Hudson Valley?

An Inspiring Message For You – The Greatest Gift of All

Girl, you are fortunate. Incredibly, undeniably, downright fortunate. Because you’ve been blessed with some of the best gifts in the world.

Like an education. A solid roof over your head. Clean water. An abundance of food. Access to the best health care in the world.

If only everyone were so privileged.

In too many countries, women and their children struggle to secure even one of these many things we take for granted each day.

Want to change that? You betcha.

And now, thanks to UNICEF’s Inspired Gifts program, you can. By purchasing real gifts to be shipped to a country where UNICEF is saving children’s lives, you can make an immediate, dramatic difference. Choose from items like a warm blanket, a mosquito net, a family water kit, a measles vaccine, or a School-in-a-Box kit.

Sure, we don’t all share the same holidays, or the same religion. And we don’t all share the same beliefs.

But as women, we all share what just may be the greatest gift of all - - the desire to make a difference.

And better yet, the capability to do so. Here’s to the power of women.

Happy Holidays to you and yours from all of us at Uptown Scoop!

You’re So Head Strong

You’ve landed big-time clients, scored multimillion-dollar deals, and worked round the clock fueled by little more than a Red Bull and some chips from the vending machine.

But pulling off a hat without looking like you’re headed to the Kentucky Derby? Now that’s tricky.

Or maybe not.

With big-name designers like Marc Jacobs peppering their winter collections with haute headgear, there’s no better time to top off your power-suited ensemble with a stylish chapeau. A few contenders:

This Hat Attack Velour Felt Large Brim Round Crown Hat is straight out of a film noir. Sophisticated, confidant, and classic.

Yes, it definitely pays to be headstrong. Not to mention, impossibly chic.

Your Best Year Ever

2007. Oh, what a year it was. Time to kick-back, prop your heels ever so smartly on your desk, clasp your hands confidently behind your head, and reflect... So many successes... So many accomplishments...

But wait! (Heels swing decisively off desk, chair spinning full circle as your hand purposefully reaches out to snatch pen and notepad.)

2008 is a whole new year! A time for new (and major) deals, a time for (even more) new clients, and time to propel you and your career (in a big way) to a whole new level... why, the list goes on and on...

Shew... just thinking about it all puts a go-getting girl in the mood for a drink (or two).

And instead of sipping the usual, ordinary, traditional champagne, this New Year’s Eve you’ll be ordering up one of these trendy new elixirs.

So unique, so complex, and oh so cool.

(Oh – you thought we were talking about the drinks? Yeah, they’re totally happening, too.)

Here’s to making 2008 your best year ever.

p.i.n.k. Vodka: This rosy elixir is packed with caffeine and guarana for a sexy energy boost.

Ty Ku: This exotic sake-based liqueur features all-natural and antioxidant-packed green tea, dragon’s eye, ginseng, pomegranate, and plum.

Canton Ginger Liqueur: Add some ginger spice to your cocktail with this unique cognac hybrid infused with notes of vanilla and orange blossom honey.

Lucid Absinthe Superieure: This is the closest you’ll get to the Green Fairy here in the States. Lucid features Absinthe trademarks like Grande Wormwood, green anise, and sweet fennel.

Happy New Year from all of us at Uptown Scoop!
